How to read a job listing

Separate the real requirements from wish lists so you know when to apply.

Most listings read like a wish list. The skill is knowing which lines are real filters and which are padding.

Look for the “must have” block

Requirements, qualifications and “what you’ll need” sections are the filters. Anything under “nice to have”, “bonus” or “preferred” is optional. Foundryy marks required and optional skills for exactly this reason.

Check eligibility first

  • Graduation year or batch (“class of 2027”)
  • Degree or field of study
  • Work authorisation and location
  • Minimum years of experience, which is often flexible for internships

Apply when you meet most of the must-haves

If you have around two thirds of the required skills and can show projects for them, apply. Use the gaps as your learning list for the next round.

Put it into practice with live openings.
